Worship

What are the services like?

At DLUMC all of our worship services are filled with friendship, smiles, and most of all the Holy Spirit changing an ordinary moment into an extraordinary encounter with God. All services offer a special message for the young of body and heart, and children of all ages are encouraged to worship with their families as much as possible. Childcare for little ones up to age 4 is available at all services in our excellently staffed nursery.  There is no dress code for any service (except wear something!) and you will find people who are dressed in jeans or shorts as well as people who wear their “Sunday best” because for them personally it is a way of honoring God.

Come to worship, and invite a friend!

Holy Grounds is an informal worship experience in the Fellowship Hall at 8:15am on Sunday mornings. Come for good coffee and conversation around the table, your favorite familiar hymns, and an uplifting Biblical message. Feel free to refill your cup of coffee anytime during the service. Children are welcome to worship along with us and enjoy the Kids Corner, with color crayons, blocks, and books, to engage their busy hands while they still observe and learn from the adults in the worship time.

Heritage is a worship experience that embraces the best of our Christian heritage in a fresh and meaningful way at 10am on Sunday mornings. Come for the beautiful choir, a mix of music featuring the organ and piano, and an uplifting Biblical message. Children are invited to participate in worship for the full hour, or to go to Adventure Kids, an interactive worship experience designed just for them.

Faith Quest is our family-friendly, modern worship service on Wednesday nights at 6:15 during the school year. Come for current music led by guitar, excellent videos and testimonies, and an uplifting Biblical message for the whole family. Come for supper at 5:15, and stay after worship to enjoy small groups for everyone in the family. Children are invited to participate in worship for the full service, or go to Adventure Kids, an interactive worship experience designed just for them.

Garden Worship is an outdoor worship service (weather permitting!) on Wednesday nights at 6:15 during the summer months. Join us in the Memorial Garden for an informal worship in God's beautiful great outdoors! In case of inclement weather, worship will move indoors.

Different times, different styles, one purpose.  Never a dress code, always a nursery.

Opportunities for Service

It takes a lot of people to help Sunday worship go smoothly, and volunteers are needed to serve in many ways. If you would be willing to offer your service in any of these areas, please use the Contact Us link on the Site Menu or call the church office at 847-4818.

Greeters.  Prior to worship, people are needed to stand near the main entrance of the church and welcome everyone who enters. Special attention is needed for those who might be visiting, especially for the first time. Greeters help them make a name tag and point out the coat rack, restrooms, etc. and invite them to the coffee fellowship after the service, if possible sitting with them during coffee and introducing them to other members.

Ushers.  Prior and during the 10:00 Heritage worship service, ushers are needed to assemble and distribute worship bulletins, make large print and hearing devices available to those who need them, count those attending, receive the morning's offering, distribute and collect the attendance sheets, and clean up papers and hymnbooks in the sanctuary after the service. Many of these tasks also need doing at the Wednesday evening service.

Liturgists.  A liturgist assists during the 10:00 Heritage worship by leading the congregation in the Call to Worship and Opening Prayer, announcing hymns, and reading Scripture Lessons.

Communion Preparation.  On the Saturday before communion each month, volunteers are needed to set up communion trays, etc. and clean up after the service.

Communion servers.  During Holy Communion each month, servers assist in the distribution of the bread and grape juice.  Young people who are in 2nd-5th grades can help during communion by holding the trays where empty communion cups are placed.

Acolytes/Candlelighters.  Youth can help by lighting the candles each Sunday morning for 10:00 Heritage worship or each Wednesday for the Faith Quest worship.

Skit Participants.  Skits are sometimes used to dramatize the lessons for the day. Often skits are humorous, designed to grab our attention in a new way.  Scripts are typically used: no memorization needed!
